Meet a Heritage Hero: Taryn Klymyk

Meet Taryn, one of our Heritage Heroes. Taryn graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Accounting from the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta in 2013. During her time at the University of Alberta, she was the president of the second largest student-run club at the Alberta School of Business, the Business Exchange Association which helped her develop leadership and decision-making skills. After graduating, she articled for the Chartered Professional Accountant designation with the firm Mowbrey Gil LLP and received her designation in April 2016. She is now working as an Accountant at the same firm.

Taryn answered some of our Heritage Heroes questions…

ON HER VOLUNTEER EFFORTS:

For the past two years I have been a member of the Young Professional Advisory Committee for Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta. This current year I am the vice chair and next year I will be the chair. YPAC raises awareness for Make-A-Wish and raises money to grant a wish to a local child. I also became a wish grantor for Make-A-Wish which is a volunteer role that helps the staff to make the wish experience for wish recipients as memorable and exciting as possible. We have had the opportunity to grant three wishes so far to children with life-threatening illnesses and it is very rewarding to witness a wish being fulfilled.

ON HER GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

During my undergraduate degree I was selected to participate in an International Business Economics class in China, travelling to Beijing and Shanghai, and I participated in an International Undergraduate Case Competition in Pamplona, Spain, as well, I taught an introductory business class. I received numerous scholarships including the Jason Lang Scholarship, the Alberta Academic Excellence Scholarship, the 2-year CA Transfer Scholarship and the Harry Schaefer FCA Award in Accounting Scholarship.”

ON HAVING A HERITAGE RESP:

Having an RESP  allowed me to afford to participate in an international exchange. For a semester during my degree I studied abroad at Le Grand Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales which is a School of Finance and Economics in Nice, France. By having an RESP I was able to save money to be able to live in France and travel extensively while living abroad. My exchange and travel experiences were invaluable to me and the RESP played a big part in making if fiscally possible. I went to numerous different countries while living abroad, including Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, the UK, Morocco and Israel. While at school I met many other students from all over the world, and made connections that I will have for the rest of my life.

Thanks to Taryn for her participation and for being one of our Heritage Heroes. We look forward to seeing where her future endeavours take her!
