familyspringwalk

Spring is here, let’s get out and walk!

Spring is here, and for many of us, it’s been a long winter, so as the warmer weather starts to arrive, why not get out and enjoy it!

My daughter still finds the weather a little chilly, making it difficult to encourage her to come for a walk for me in the evening. So I came up with an idea: a Bingo game while we walk.  The great thing about this activity was that it was very little work on my part, and my daughter absolutely loved it.

The first step is to create your own Bingo cards.  You can be as simple or as fancy as you want with this.  You can draw by hand, or, in my case, I used my word processor and inserted a few tables into the document to create the cards.

You can then add pictures or words to each block, depending on what works best for your child.  My daughter is learning to read, so I opted for words to add a reading element to this activity.  The words or pictures may take a little thought depending on where you’re planning to walk.  We walked through our neighbourhood, which consists of both high traffic areas and a quiet nature park close by, so I did a combination of nature-related words and some things I knew she would see on a busy street.

This is a photo of our Bingo cards:

Some of the words I included were: cat, ball, swing, leaves, yellow house, blue car, and for fun, given that we still have small piles of snow in some places here in the east coast, I also used the word snow.

Have fun with it and use words or pictures that are relevant to where you are walking.  Try to throw a few challenging ones in there so the game isn’t over so quickly.  We played until my daughter’s whole card was full, which resulted in a walk of about an hour.  She has already asked when we will be playing again.
