Meet a Heritage Hero: Jordan Grant
Meet Jordan, one of our Heritage Heroes. Jordan is a third-year Management Engineering student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. After a summer internship at Deloitte, he developed the Deloitte Tech Exchange Program, which connected 100 students with
cutting-edge technologies and earned Jordan the Co-op Student of the Year Award. This year, Jordan is at yet another internship for a leading Software Engineering company in Toronto.
Jordan answered some of our Heritage Heroes questions…
ON HIS APPROACH TO LEARNING:
I think that most of my learning is done outside the classroom and I have interests in a ton of different areas. I’ve created music videos that have gotten over fifty thousand views on YouTube, and I’ve built apps that have been played by thousands.
ON HAVING A HERITAGE RESP:
“It allowed me to pursue internships that interested me, regardless of the pay. It allowed my to dedicate time to defining my academic and career goals, instead of trying to find ways to fund the term ahead. It definitely made me feel supported by my parents, and made me want to work hard to make them proud.”
ON HIS HEROES:
“My dad’s my hero because he instilled in me the passion for learning. He showed me robotics. As a young kid, I got into programming in the fifth grade. I learned how to program even bigger robots, eventually creating a robot that won the world championships.”
ON HIS MOST INFLUENTIAL MENTORS:
“At each of my internships at Deloitte and Kik, I had a mentor that supported my ideas and ensured the success of projects I wanted to develop outside of my day-to-day role. At Deloitte, Keyur Shah worked closely with me to develop the Deloitte Tech Exchange program at the University of Waterloo. That program was my idea of creating an industry-related challenge paired with the latest technology for students looking to work on side projects. At Kik, Jinny Kim believed in my idea for a social chatbot campaign and put me in contact with people in the company that could help grow my idea. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to materialize these projects.”
Thanks to Jordan for his participation and for being one of our Heritage Heroes. We can’t wait to see where his future endeavours take him.
